Manual assembly of center consoles for an OEM

The aim of the project was to digitize the workflow steps involved in the manual assembly of center consoles in sequence.

Center consoles per month
1
Minutes lead time before production
1
Components per month
1000

The challenge

The challenges in this project primarily concerned the short lead time from receipt of assembly data to dispatch, as well as the non-digital transmission of the variants to be produced.
  • High variety of variants in the center console
  • Need for a clear and transparent configuration of all work steps
  • Non-digital interface for transmitting the variants to be assembled
  • High time pressure throughout the entire assembly process
  • Requirement for multiple backup processes for different error scenarios

The solution

During the course of the project, an interface was designed and developed together with the OEM, enabling digital and automated transmission of variant data.

– Simple and clear configuration of variants and work steps via the web-based interface
– Joint design and development of an automated data transfer for the assembly of variants
– Implementation of various warning notifications when receiving implausible or missing data
– Backup mode for manually importing sequence data via Excel
– Printing of bills of materials per station, including instructions for manual processing in case of an emergency manual process

The result

Development of a new digital interface in collaboration with the customer
Simple and intuitive management of workflows via the web interface
Creation of manual assembly instructions and parts lists for emergency mode
Design of multiple backup processes to ensure correct delivery even in emergency mode despite short lead times
